The True Endgame

Original ONGOING Adventure Comedy Fantasy Romance Harem LitRPG Magic Male Lead Slice of Life Virtual Reality
Warning This fiction contains:
  • Profanity
  • Sexual Content

What defines endgame content? Is it raiding epic dungeons to take down the strongest bosses there are, or is it facing off against other players to climb the ladder and become the top PvPer? Is endgame content gathering materials and crafting the strongest and most exotic equipment that there is, or is it all about playing the market and amassing more wealth than everybody else? Some people even argue that fashion and minigames are endgame content!

Ryouta has already done all of that. Having spent most of his life playing MMO after MMO, he now finds himself wanting to live a virtual life that is far more relaxed and casual than what he is known for.

To Ryouta, the true endgame is fishing.

Review as of Patch 6.0 (will update as I read)

Overview of the Story:

The True Endgame revolves around our MC's journey into a new game that is unique. The game doesn't show a status screen, Skills, Stats, a Character Sheet, or anything else. This game, made to feel and be treated like reality, allows for a wide range of play and adventure. The game itself is not the only thing unique, as the MC isn't about conquering the game world (not yet at least). Instead, it revolves around adventuring and exploring the game world in a fun, eccentric, and comedic manner with the MCs two past friends and a developing crew of new friends. Still, on his journey the MC and his two unique older friends are placed in situations that give way to their past deeds in game. Deeds....of an infamous nature.

Spoiler: Spoiler

 About the Story:

  • It is slow paced. Meaning it isn't constant action. Even more importantly, it doesn't have a character status or game messages that tell you what is going on. You actually have to read and not skim over.
  • It is light-hearted and funny. Not about a badass MC (not yet), but rather about a player's adventure's. It is much more realistic, but also super endearing and enjoyable to read.
  • The characters are unique. The MC is a commonly trophed character, but one that is embraced, and honestly, super easy to connect with and like. The supporting characters are all also likable (varies by reader) and mix well togethor in a funny but cohesive way
  • The story is about interaction. Interaction with the world and the game mechanics, achieved by adventuring and exploring. Interaction between players and their very different personalities that blend togethor. And even interaction between real life and the game.

What I like:

  • The Author. He knows what he is writing. He is writing it well. He is apart of the story, replying to comments and being apart of the community of RR.
  • The new take on LitRPG. This story is more personable, and about adventure, rather than just leveling up and killing and being badass. Although it will 100% get to a level of a badass MC.
  • The Characters. Besides Bone, who we don't see much of yet, the other side characters and the MC are all individuals who are fleshed out and unique with their quirks and actions. Some people might not like them, due to personal beliefs or reasons, but I like them all thus far.

What I don't like:

  • Small scope. I like stories that give a hint at something bigger in the background. Whether its a wide and known continent to go to, a level to reach, etc. Currently, the story is still based around a "what to do next?" pace, with no real forward thought of the characters of a game plan. They are just enjoying the game rather than fighting for a goal. THIS ISN'T BAD. In fact, it blends in perfectly with how the characters want to actually play the game. I just like knowing the scope of the game, the continent, the power system, the strongest people, etc.
  • Action scenes. Whether it is because Ace, the author, doesn't know how to write action scenes well, or because it isn't his focus, there isn't much action in the story. Currently there has been two fights.
  • The Game System. I like information, and the fact that there is no game status screen or way to see a character's growth, is minorly annoying. I like being able to see where they started and where they are going.

Overall Review:

Honestly, I love this story. It is unique, and doesn''t cater to the audience of RR which demands magic and strong MCs that fight and kickass. I do love to read and write such stories myself, but this is a unique and refreshing take on LitRPG that I enjoy reading.

The negatives are minor, and are just my preference. Even so, I feel that the author will incorporate more of a scope and badass MC as the story progresses, which I am happy for.

The author seems to have big plans for the story, turning it into a large arcing storyline with lots of cool features. I can only say I can't wait to read more. When the author does set up a patreon, I will join right way, and this is the first and only story / author I can say that about. (Edit: He set it up, and I joined...)

Oh, I need a title? Damn... Fish Waifu Weapons!

Style:  It has a harem-y light novel feel to it.  Except the harem is actually being acknowledged.  So buckle up folks.  Four stars because Ace said fish weapons were stupid.

Grammar:  Four star for being practically pristine.  Honestly, a five star here is practically impossible.  You know, subjective area and whatnot.

Story:  Person gets bored of being the ultimate evil in every game he plays and decides to take it easy for once.  Will he lose his virginity?  Knowing Ace?  The odds are stacked against our boy Ryouta.  Also, since this is an MMO story, there is a real life aspect, but that has been briefly touched upon.  Typical "the world is dying", global warming scenario.

Character: Japanese half star due to the cringe.  Everyone has cringed like that towards the opposite sex at least once.  It brings some human element into the story.  You haven't cringed like that towards the opposite sex?  You sir, are  a robot.

We have Fenrir, our side-protagonist wolf boy weeb who swears he isn't into loli snuff porn.  Serra, our hidden pervert who is as much loli as RRL legally allows.  Casscass, our Tsundere frontliner who blushes at the tip of a hat.  And finally, we have Rock, True Protagonist extrodinaire!  She will be leading our merry band of harem to true greatness.  Maybe to other cannonballs.

Unashamed King of Weeb Trash

This is, without a doubt, the most well done piece of weeby, wish-fulfillment fiction I have had the pleasure to read. You might actually forget the story is either of those things as it glides along. I usually don't give perfect scores because "there are no perfect storblah blah blah", but I'm arbitrarily throwing that sentiment out the window, just like I'm arbitrarily deciding reasons to give each category five stars after I've already done so.

Style: character driven slice of life that is, shockingly, driven forward with well developed characters. The story seamlessly blends from humor to convincing drama, weaving in the occasional bit of action and tech to keep the setting relevant. I love it.

Story: Pretty flexible on this since it is essentially slice of life. Characters have goals, and they move to meet those goals while we readers enjoy living vicariously through them. Some won't like the lax adherence to "the main plot (lol)", but for those of you tired of "OP MC tromps through fantasy land, collects all teh waifu, becomes god by transmuting the philosopher's stone and tossing the lance of longinus at the demon god", this is a beautiful change of pace.

Grammar: Absolutely zero issue. There's maybe one or two typos a chapter, and they get corrected quickly. The prose is well above par for RRL, in fact, so this is also a nice refresher if you're tired of broken english. No offense to you writters practicing english with your stories; it's damn super fucken amazing that you can not only speak, but write, in more than one language, but reading some of your works takes a non-zero amount of effort, so it's nice to not have to do that sometimes.

Characters: You've got your tsundere, yandere, kuudere, dande- wait, no, this is a review, not karaoke. There is in fact a tsundere though, as well as a kuudere, but don't worry! These characters aren't just flat tropes. No, the tropes actually feel more like afterthoughts that organically sprouted from fleshed out character seeds. Further, there are compassionate friends and raging assholes, sometimes in the same character! Every individual feels like, well, an individual, and it's lovely. Just about the only thing I could think to maybe complain about would be Oleander's presence as Camp Gay, but because the rest of the story flows around it so well, I had to look back and squint my eyes to see it as something undesireable.

All that said, here's a list of traits that directly oppose this story:

  • Dislike of the Slice of Life genre
  • Vehement dislike of harems no matter their execution
  • Those who don't know the terms: Tsundere, yandere, kuudere, onii-chan, hentai, etc.
  • Those who do know the above terms and hatefully regard them as lazy translating (I feel you bro)
  • Anyone who still involves themselves with a side on the Sub v Dubs debate
  • Yaoi shippers
  • Hardcore (and maybe mediumcore) LitRPG fans who dive headfirst into the slog of numbers

If you identify with any of the above, it's a significant deal less likely that you'll enjoy this story. It's not impossible, however, and I'd encourage you to give this a try. The female leads are too adorable to just give up on without at least a modest shot. That said, you'll likely know within the first few chapters if this story is for you.

PS this is not Ace's alternate account

PPS of course, you never thought it was, right? Hahaha

PPPS It's okay to ignore all the post scripts seriously stop and don't mess with that curtain over there on the way out.

A damn good story. The characters are fantastic and are not some shitty 2 dimensional stereotypes. Each character feels alive and have their own noticable quirks and personalities. I can't say much on the grammar as my own isn't very good, but nothing has disturbed the flow for me. So far no set up objective or anything which is fine given it's more of a slice of life story. They style isn't anything crazy out there or unique, but why fix something when it isn't broken?

TL;DR It's definitely worth checking out if you're fine with weeb shit.

Style Score: 5/5

The news shows are such a great way to describe and foreshadow things. They've granted knowledge and a suprisingly deep impression of the world without the need for dry, emotionless info dumps.

Grammar Score: 5/5 Yes. Some say a 5 is impossible. I'm not an editor, or a grammar nazi. If I don't notice, I don't care.

Story Score: 5/5

The story is kind of like what a harem slice of life anime would be if the author/director actually thought about what they're creating. The tropes are there, but done with respect, instead of just beating us poor consumers over the head with their painfully dense main character accidentaly charming and saving all the pretty ladies.

Character Score : 5/5

There are friends! So many harem stories (authors) seen to forget that there's variable levels of attraction. Someone can be be a genuine friend without being a romantic interest.  Not every character is part of the harem. Not every monster girl is a sexy babe out to jump the guy's bone. People have lives beyond the story we get with the main character, and even he has more to him than just his basic "tragic backstory".

Nothing else needs to be said, does it?

No, seriously. That's the review.

Okay.. fine. There's some other stuff too. Like interesting characters and good world building (inside the game and out).

Anything else? Uh... Did I mention the Fish Waifu Weapon? Read it. It'll make sense..

Thus far; it's well written and the characters are likeable. The Mc is a tad cliche but the author pulls it off a good flow. Character interaction seems like it's going to prominent in the story which always fantastic; we'll actually get to see development!  Yayay. Also grammar spelling etc is good. Author-san: good luck !

Lately i am looking for a good read where plot progresses not that fast and not that dull to the point it became too bland, you see im tired reading constant warfare plots of novels where mc battles here and there(i think u being weak on battle scenes was not a negative perk for me). Novel phasing on its course is good ,atmosphere for me is soothing to read and the way you make the romance pace not that fast i should conclude that when other girls gets pop up you wont forget the girls he conquered already(i hate author forgets the conquered harem members and lack screen time). By the way i hope some how you make doujinshi of your char different from main plot like tortured or brainwash heroines by villains, that's just some examples. And cant wait your smut scenes where its connected to main plot, im still reading early chaps tho. Keep up the good work and hope novel lasts longer as what you depict it to be. I do wonder if you somehow publish this will you publish the out of the main plot doujins?like some bonus pages for buying the book
