Nick Klein is your average high school geek--if you can still count as average when your grandfather is a retired superhero, and you've been trained in the martial arts by his friend, a mysterious, immortal mercenary.

After his grandfather dies, Nick inherits the Rocket suit, the last suit of powered armor his grandfather made, as well as his grandfather's team's base, and all the equipment inside it. Years ahead of powered armor developed by governments around the world, the Rocket suit allows its wearer to lift tons, shrug off bullets and manipulate sound.

Now supplied with everything they need, Nick and his friends, descendants of his grandfather's teammates, attempt to bring back a superhero team that was originally formed during World War 2. Along the way they'll face the normal problems of high school (bullies, homework, and dating), and the less normal problems like supervillians and mysteries left over from their grandparents' past.

The Legion of Nothing first debuted on my website legionofnothing.com in 2007. In that period it's updated more than 900 times, is still running, and has had millions of pageviews. The first two years have been released as an ebook, receiving good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

I hope you'll enjoy it, and that you'll review it and comment. You can also vote for it on Top Web Fiction and rate it on Web Fiction Guide.

First off, the entire series is posted at inmydaydreams.com .

Now, I’ve been reading this web serial for a few years now. It was the first, or close to the first, story of this format that I’ve read, and it’s still really entertaining. I’ve even gone and reread it a couple times, and it continues to intrigue.

Style: The story is written in 1st person, which works mostly because the main character is analytical yet spacy. He does go into detail about people’s powers, some wondering, but a lot of stuff that is really nuanced, like emotions and descriptions, he describes them succinctly and matter-of-factly. He does seem to have a slight problem empathizing, but it doesn’t seem to be debilitating. And he doesn’t seem inhuman, just slightly detached.

Story: We’re following the lives of the grandchildren of some WWII superheroes. Thus, we go into having to deal with old villains, creating an identity with respect to their predecessors’, as well as typical teenage stuff of figuring out what they want to do. There’s lots of action, but also fiddly stuff about the structure of a team and how to decide what to do without depending on just heroic instincts. There’s lots of fun, and lots of serious parts without much death or gore. When there is death, it is dealt with seriously and not really dramatized or downplayed.

Grammar: Not much to say here, other than the author doesn’t have many grammar errors, and responds to reader comments on them.

Characters: The characters are very well developed, even if that isn’t that obvious at the beginning. The main character’s lack of introspection and awkwardness in social interactions leads to a slightly slanted view of others, but everyone’s motivations, goals, and personalities shine through their actions and words. Also, they remain consistent, even where they grind against others’.

Find it annoying when this story gets less ratings than the average "well done" stories on royalroad, so giving it a 5. For the book, I really wish mc had a superpower but damn this is well written. I look forward to more (but I'm still on like chapter 10 so I've got no problems there for now lol)

How to review this story? What could I possibly say that would give enough credit to the author? Not only has it been running for almost a decade now, you can also clearly see the development of the characters, as well as the authors. It is simply an amazing work!

Style:

The perspective is not unique, the author uses first person from the point of view of the MC, who can be considered as one of those eccentric, genius inventors, who also have a skewed view on life and the people around them. I personally prefer third person, since it allows the author to seamlessly move through characters and their actions. Yet, here, first person is perfect! Especially when the author gives us a few chapters with the pov’s of others, filling the gap that is created by the skewed view of the MC. What's interesting is that there is no awkwardness when reading from Nick's perspective, it's so marvelously done that it feels natural, so much so that when reading from someone else's pov, you only want to read more of Nick's thoughts, he's more like a computer with a really bad memory than a human XD

Story:

The story is not that new today, but back when it started, it was probably one of its kind. It is simply marvelous how well the author leads us through the scenes and builds the lore of the world. You get some hints early on, but nothing major. Only with time does the story slowly unravel, especially once you get to the 5th arc. (Yes, there are more arcs on the author’s site than you will find here, so feel free to go over there and continue reading if you have caught up with the chapters posted here). I won't say anything else about the story, since I don't want to spoil anything, instead I'll just say this: I really enjoyed reading it.

Grammar:

A few minor mistakes, mostly typos that you miss when writing, so nothing major. In other words, the grammar is excellent.

Character:

So, now we come to the main point of the review, the characters. How can I score them, I simply love the MC, he is one of those no nonsense (he probably can't even process it, so he just shoves it away) genius types who are slightly oblivious to the people around them and social interaction. Since it's from his perspective, you get a direct peek into his mind and how it works. Yet, there are many more characters except for him, and most get enough to a lot of screen time, allowing us an insight in their thoughts, actions and personalities, from Nick's perspective, of course (there are a few chapters with other pov's, so we get to know them better then). The characters are as developed as the story, and the further you read, the more they grow. There is a comment from the author about how he was surprised at how much they changed and developed in the currently ongoing arc, compared to the first two-three arcs. So it's a noticeable change, and since they're literally growing up in the story, it's excellent work by the author, showing us how his chara’s develop and grow up from teenagers into adults and all the hardship and drama they go through while living a double life.

Overall, I would say that this is one of the best fiction novels I have read in a very long time and I warmly suggest all of you to at least try it. Although there are no OP MC's, no reincarnation, fantasy, VR and other popular aspects in it, since it is about superheroes, that doesn't mean that it's not worth at least a look, I guarantee that you'll find at least something intriguing in it.

In conclusion: Excellently done author, I bow to your skill, persistence and dedication, please keep at it and continue filling our dull hours with new and exciting adventures.

One of my oldest reads and favorite.

When I saw that this was being posted here I knew I had to review, This is one of the original web novels before RR existed. Its been updated on inmydaydreams.com since 2007 (If I remember correctly) and has spawned some of my favorite web novels of all times, such as worm whose author has specifically given a shoutout to this story as major inspiration.

For me this novel is extremley nostalgic and holds many memories, and even though I have not been consistantly reading it(I stopped after worm was being written in 2011) It still holds a place in my heart.

Good super hero slice of life tale. Reads well and appears to be properly edited. At least to my admittedly poor skills. The story does tends to drag on in places and the characters growth feels stunted. However still very much worth your time to read.
